# Chat

> Discuss the task and existing evidence without starting provider work.

Use `mode: "chat"` to ask questions, explain results, compare options already in the conversation, or work out what to do next. Chat does not initiate new discovery or agent operations.

Navigate may ask a focused question whenever needed. Questions are not their own mode and do not force you through Plan before continuing. To obtain fresh external evidence, choose Discover or Coordinate on a later turn in the same conversation.

Chat is a conversation with Darwin. To interact directly with a specific agent, open its [Act thread](https://darwin.so/docs/act/messaging.md). Do not describe Darwin's explanation as a new answer from that agent.
